A costume of a thousand feathers...

... begins with a single trip to Hancock Fabrics.

I made my first pilgrimage on the Sunday before Christmas.

Three hours later...

I spent all afternoon pushing that shopping cart around but found the perfect everything.

Not only was it all exactly what I had in mind, but it was all on sale for 30-50% off. Serious budgetary score.

I've made a bit of progress since this initial purchase in actually cutting up and sewing a few yards of the haul into what's beginning to resemble a dress, but more on that in a later post.

For now I'm more interested in bragging that (some of) my feathers have arrived!

Snoopie is grumpy when you wake her up to pose as size reference in blog pictures.

Forty five inches of iridescent awesomeness. 40 feathers pictured. 80 total received.

I ordered these long guys from FeatherMart through Amazon and they arrived in impeccable condition. The feathers themselves are of a much better quality than I was expecting for the price (About 75 cents per feather; by far the cheapest I found them anywhere.) and were packaged very carefully. Despite their size, not a single one was damaged in transit and they showed up two days ahead of schedule. So impressed with this seller.

Still waiting on the 100-count of 12" tail feathers and the 12-pack of crest feathers from different Amazon sellers, but progress is progress. Those should arrive tomorrow. There is no more frustrating Amazon order tracking status than "Delivery attempted." Damn you, holiday delivery schedule.

  1. Lady! Lovin the blog! Your costume-making skills are just, wow, I think you've found your calling. Can't wait to see more progress!

Can't remember if I ever sent you this digital catalogue of old carnival costumes from NOLA, but your sketches reminded me of it... http://www.louisianadigitallibrary.org/cdm/search/collection/p15140coll40. Enjoy!
